I wanted to bring together a mix of references that have shaped the brand over the years—from the iconic S-Class silhouette and the original Mercedes wheel created 140 years ago to influences from racing culture, hip-hop, and vintage Benz advertising. In 2000 she became the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest and survive, as part of the Nepali Women Millennium Expedition. In 2016 she was listed on BBC’s list of 100 most influential and inspiring women. In 2003 she had summited Mount Everest three times, the most for a woman, and in 2022 she beat her own and her late husband Gheorghe Dinarescu’s record, by successfully sumitting Everest a tenthtime. This tenth summit was documented by Lucy Walker in a Netflix documentary, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa. Another alter ego is Shirley Smith, an outsider artist, creator of the exhibition Delusions of Grandeur at The Wallace Collection in London, one of the best shows I’ve seen. She competed for the Audi factory team in the World Rally Championship, she took four victories and finished second in the driver’s world championship in 1982. My illustration shows the Palace of the Parliament as a huge, colourful funerary monument — inspired by the Merry Cemetery in Maramureș and by a Vlad Nancă piece where he added church domes to the building, as a critique of the corruption and excess behind both the People’s House and the National Cathedral. Built in the ’80s–’90s, the Palace required demolishing an entire neighbourhood and displacing over 40,000 people, with many deaths during construction. That’s why I imagined it as a funerary monument. In an early sketch I also added the classic Bucharest warning “ATENȚIE, CADE TENCUIALA” (“Beware, falling plaster”) — a sign often used instead of actually fixing buildings, which felt like the perfect metaphor for the city itself. But we figured it wouldn’t translate very well in French and it wouldn’t be very relevant for people outside Bucharest so we dropped it. The illustration is conceived as a collage of iconic Bucharest landmarks and architectural details, with subtle references to the city’s specialty coffee and electronic music scenes, all treated in a loose, almost abstract language. I especially enjoyed seeing how the Godmother team translated these shapes across different media and formats — from print to three-dimensional objects and animation.
